Targa Florio, Sicily, with Alfa-Romeo

This tour around the renewed Targa Florio classic car rally takes you to the north-west of Sicily. Palermo, capital of the largest Mediterranean island, is the starting point of this event. Unlike similar rallies such as Mille Miglia and Gran Premio Nuvolari, the modern Targa Florio is not driven as a circuit itinerary, but with daily laps starting and ending in Palermo. That said, we will offer you insights into an exciting southern city which struggles to leave its notorious past behind, headed by  four-times mayor and renowned Anti-Mafia-expert Leoluca Orlando. Changing hotel on the third day of the tour, you will be able to enjoy amenities of the noble beach town of Cefalú and its sandy beaches.

Your Car
Alfa Romeo. Just the sound of the name awakens associations with Italy, and with sporty cars that really stand out from the rest. For some, it means design in its highest and most complete form; for others, it means that yearning by those in the North for things Italian.

For Italians, Alfa Romeo is a part of the homeland.  This is your chance to explore that homeland and drive a true classic of the landscape.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1:
Welcome to Chiantishire
You’ll be welcomed by our tour guide at Florence airport and accompanied to your hotel. Over a welcome coffee, you’ll get to know your fellow travellers then take a complete look at your vehicle and your road book. The Chiantishire country roads are winding but with little traffic  —perfect to get to know your Alfa Romeo. Your team will be on hand with insider tips and places for your own individual dinner experience in Siena.

Day 2:
Pienza and Crete Senesi
Today’s route passes from one spectacular picture perfect postcard to the next. Southwest of Siena, the winding country roads are interspersed with hamlets such as Ville di Corsano, Radi, San Giovanni d’Asso. You’ll reach Pienza partly on Via Cassia, an ancient Roman road. Pienza is home to the Pecorino di Pienza. For lunch you can choose between this town, described by Pope Pius II as the epitome of a medieval small town, or neighbouring Montalcino, made world famous by the Brunello di Montalcino, in a unique panorama location enthroned in vineyards. The highlight of the afternoon is driving along the ridge of the volcanic crater landscape of Crete Senesi, surrounded by loamy soil that falls away sharply.

Day 3:
Gran Premio Nuvolari roaring through Tuscany
The beautiful sister of the Mille Miglia is found in Tuscany. The exact route of the Gran Premio is not yet public, but one thing is for sure, today you’ll experience automobile history first hand. About 280 teams duke it out over 1,000 kms for victory in the Gran Premio Nuvolari. In Siena participants drive along the wonderful Piazza Il Campo, giving you an opportunity to get close and personal with high performance racing cars. The highlight is driving a classic Alfa Romeo Spider among the racing teams. Excited spectators will cheer you on as you take in this unrivalled flair. In the evening we’ll accompany you to a gathering on tips to Tuscan cuisine.

Day 4:
Across Chiantishire at the wheel of your Alfa Romeo
One of the best-known wine producing regions in Italy contains the black rooster in its coat of arms, Chianti Classico. The wood covered hills between Siena and Florence have been used for wine making since the Roman times. At the beginning of the twentieth century, 33 wine makers came together to protect their wine and the Chianti Classico brand from imitators. You’ll pass Gaiole, Radda and Castellina in Chianti en-route back to your hotel where you’ll bid farewell to your Alfa Romeo.
